Study Room

A: What's the most you've ever lost in a coin toss?

C: Sir?

A: The most you ever lost in a coin toss.

C: I don't know. I couldn't say.

A: Call it.

C: Call it?

A: Yes.

C: For what?

A: Just call it.

C: Well, we need to know what we're calling it for here.

A: You need to call it. I can't call it for you. It wouldn't be fair.

C: I didn't put nothing up.

A: Yes, you did. You've been putting it up your whole life. You just didn't know it. You know what date is on this coin?

C: No.

A: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it.

C: Look... I need to know what I stand to win.

A: Everything.

C: How's that?

A: You stand to win everything. Call it.

C: Alright. Heads then.

A: Well done. Don't put it in your pocket.

C: Sir?

A: Don't put it in your pocket. It's your lucky quarter.

C: Where you want me to put it?

A: Anywhere not in your pocket. Or it'll be mixed in with the others and become just a coin. Which it is.

C: I know where the satchel is.

A: If you knew, you would have it with you.

C: Find it from the river bank. I know where it is.

A: I know something better.

C: What's that?

A: I know where it's going to be.

C: Where is that?

A: It will be brought to me and placed at my feet.

C: You don't know to a certainty. Twenty minutes it could be here.

A: I do know to a certainty. And you know what's going to happen now, Carson? You should admit your situation. There would be more dignity in it.

C: You got no cause to hurt me.

A: No. But I gave my word.

C: You gave your word?

A: To your husband.

C: That don't make sense. You gave your word to my husband to kill me?

A: Your husband had the opportunity to save you. Instead, he used you to try to save himself.

C: Not like that. Not like you say...... You don't have to do this.

A: They'll always say the same thing.

C: What did they say?

A: They say you don't have to do this.

C: You don't.

A: Okay. This is the best I can do. Call it.

C: I knowed you was crazy when I saw you sittin' there. I knowed exactly what was in store for me.

A: Call it.

C: No. I ain't gonna call it.

A: Call it.

C: The coin don't have no say. It's just you.

L: How'd you sleep?

T: I don't know. Had dreams.

L: Well you got time for 'em now. Anything interesting?

T: They always is to the party concerned.

L: Ed Tom, I'll be polite.

T: Okay. Two of 'em. Both had my father. It's peculiar. I'm older now than he

ever was by twenty years. So, in a sense he's the younger man. Anyway, first one I don't remember too well but... It was about meeting him in town someplace where he gave me some money. I think I lost it. The second one, it was like we was both back in older times and I was on horseback goin' through the mountains of a night. Goin' through this pass in the mountains. It was cold and there's snow on the ground. He rode past me and kept on goin'. Never said nothing goin' by. He just rode on past. He had his blanket wrapped around him and his head down. When he rode past I seen he was carrying fire in a horn the way people used to do and I could see the horn from the light inside of it. About the color of the moon. And in the dream I knew that he was goin' on ahead and that he's fixing to make a fire somewhere out there in all that dark and all that cold, I knew that whenever I got there he'd be there. Then, I woke up.
